Next week, we will almost certainly hear from Google about the next version of Android. That's because Google I/O, the company's annual developer conference is next week, and that's where Android 2.2 Froyo was officially announced last year.
The version of Android that will be announced at this year's I/O will probably be a bit more important though, since, as Eric Schmidt said a while ago, it will combine Gingerbread, the current smartphone-focused version of the OS, with Honeycomb, the first ever tablet-focused variation of Android, perhaps putting an end to this two-version strategy that has been out for the past few months.
This is all speculation, sure, but just be patient and wait for next week. Google is rather predictable with these things, and all signs point to the above.
Speaking of all sign pointing somewhere... it certainly looks like that next version of Android will be officially called Ice Cream Sandwich. We have heard this before, and Ice Cream is also a natural contender - though it looks like Google may have gone the more complex route and for the first time ever chosen a three-word name.
That the next version of Android will be called Ice Cream Sandwich was revealed in a support forum by Romain Guy, a Google employee working on the mobile operating system, in reponse to a buy filing.
Of course, this is no official press release, but coming from a Google employee, on an official Google forum... there is probably not going to be anything more official than this until the next version of Android is going to be unveiled.
Unfortunately we do not know the version number just yet. It may be 4 (which would make the most sense), or 3.1 or 2.4 - which would both make a bit less sense, or 3.1 or 2.4 - which would both make a bit less sense, if this is a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb.
