Owners of T-Mobile's rugged Motorola Defy - rejoice! The first (and hopefully not last, but to be honest, it probably is) major software update for your smartphone has just become officially available. The Motorola Defy shipped with Android 2.1, and ever since its release people have been waiting for the Froyo update. Well, many, many months later, it's here.
The update comes over-the-air, and to get it, just go to Setting > About phone > System updates on your Defy and force it to check for new updates. It should find the Froyo update. Do note that this is a ~120 MB file, so perhaps you should download it over Wi-Fi (if your mobile data plan is not as unlimited as advertised).
Also make sure your battery is sufficiently charged before proceeding. If all is well, just let your phone download and install the update.
The updte obviously makes all of Froyo's goodies available to Motorola Defy owners. You now have support for Adobe Flash, you can install apps on the SD card, and your phone can be turned into a Wi-Fi hotspot to provide mobile connectivity for up to five other devices. The handset's speed of operation has also been significantly improved.
But what, there is more! In addition to the standard Froyo features, Motorola has added other improvements and enhancements to the Defy. A new Profiles feature provides three different customizable sets of homescreens; contacts can be searched right in the dialer, T9-style Linkedln accounts can now be added for integration with contacts, social networking updates, and messaging; and the Gallery UI has been revamped.
