If you were holding out before booking your summer holiday because you wanted to make sure you got a place in the iPhone 5 queue, the latest rumors suggest you should not bother - go ahead and book. Reuters has had confirmation from "three people with direct knowledge" of Apple's supply chain in China, that say the iPhone 5 would not be shipping until September.
According to Kelvin Soh in Hong Kong, the "production of the new iPhone will start in July/August and the smartphone will look largely similar to the iPhone 4" - a viewpoint that ties in nicely with rumors about a September launch that surfaced on Tuesday.
His sources declined to be indentified because the plans for the new iPhone are not yet public; and an Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong was not available for comment, while officials at Largan, Wintek and Foxconn also declined to comment.
This latest leak crowns a swirling rumourmill that has been slowly gaining momentum. Its gradually gaining more traction that Apple will hold off from what has traditionally been a summer launch for its phone, instead opting for a September release in order to gain from the Christmas spending sprees.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who works for Taiwanese company Concord Securities, the iPhone 5 will only feature "slight modifications" to the design of the iPhone 4, and it will finally go into mass production in September this year.
He claims that the Apple handset will contain the same A5 processor as the iPad 2, and that Qualcomm is to get in on the action by supplying the baseband processor for GSM and CDMA models.
