With Comcast's Cleawire mobile broadband service slowly rolling out acorss the country since its 2009 debut, competition with Sprint's Now Network is heating up. A few months after Sprint released their version of Novatel's MiFi 4082 earlier this year, Comcast has released their own branded version they call their "personal 4G/3G mobile hotspot".
The hotspot features an SDHC slot for up to 32GB of flash storage, an E-ink display and a Li-lon battery thai claims up to four hours of active use and 60 hours standby. The GPS-enabled device can connect up to five WiFi devices simultaneously, and Comcast promises 4G download speeds up to 6Mbps and 1.4Mbps with 3G.
Like most new wireless technology, 4G service is not available everywhere, so potential buyers would do well to investigate Comcast's coverage map.
The $25 price tag comes in $55 cheaper than the Sprint-branded version, but requires a 1 year Internet 2go contract, which starts at $40/month. That's $10 cheaper than what Sprint charges for the same service (both providers use Clearwire's WiMax network).
But Comcast is not the only cable provider to offer similar mobile internet packages: Time Warner Cable is even giving away mobile hotspots to get users to sign up for their Road Runner Mobile service that debuted last year.
