Buyer's Guide for Mac Notebooks

When we talk about Mac notebooks, we talk about something out of the ordinary. Its style, for one, is definitely a main selling point. With its mix of simplicity and sophistication, every prospective customer will surely be enticed by its looks. When it comes to performance, you won’t be disappointed. Equipped with fast processors and a big-enough memory, these bad boys surely pack the goods.

There are currently three members in the MacBook family – the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, which are all designed to offer something different. Each model is individually equipped with their own set of features and specifications to suit a wide range of users.

If you’re a prospective buyer who is not yet decided on which Mac notebook to buy, this guide will breakdown the important factors you need to consider so you can identify the right notebook that accommodates your needs and budget.

Processor

All Mac notebooks are equipped with top-of-the-line Intel processors. If you’re a power-hungry person who uses a lot of power-hungry applications, you should consider the MacBook Pro which runs up to 2.66GHz on an Intel Core i7 processor. The MacBook comes second with 2.4GHz, but still fast enough to juggle multiple applications. The MacBook Air, with its 1.4GHz, 1.86GHz and 2.13GHz configurations, might pale in comparison to its two big brothers, but for its size, it still provides you with more than enough power to get the job done.

Memory

All Mac notebooks come with a standard 2GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM. The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, can support up to 4 MB of RAM, so if you’re a researcher who needs to pack in the documents, a professional gamer who just couldn’t get enough games in his collection or anyone who needs a huge amount of storage space, the MacBook Pro is a great choice.

Display and Graphics

Mac notebook displays come with an LED-backlit glossy widescreen format. The MacBook makes use of a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, while the MacBook Pro is available in 13-inch, 15.4-inch and 17-inch models with resolutions of 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900 and 1920 x 1200 pixels respectively.
The MacBook Air now has 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch displays to choose from.

If you plan to play games and watch movies all the time, all three Mac notebooks are great choices with their LED-backlit displays. However, the MacBook Pro would be a better choice since it offers a larger screen size.

Size and Weight - Portability

The MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro differ in their physical dimensions with varying degrees of portability so consider how much mileage you expect your notebook will cover. If you are a business traveler who is always shuffling from one flight connection to the next, then the incredibly light and compact MacBook Air is the perfect companion. If you are a student who needs an all-in-one notebook, then the MacBook is more up your alley which at 5lbs is light enough to carry around campus and robust enough to endure the rumble and tumble of travel thanks to its polycarbonate shell. For half a pound to two pounds more, you can have all the power and larger display of the MacBook Pro.

Graphics Processor

All Mac notebooks are equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM. However, selected models of the MacBook Pro utilize the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor. Although the graphics capability of the other two is not at par with the MacBook Pro, you can still watch movies, author multimedia content and play video games with no trouble at all.

Cost

The MacBook Air and MacBook are the most affordable (starting at $999) and has all the features you need in one compact, robust package. If you want more bang for you buck, then the MacBook Pro, priced at $1199, is what you are looking for.

Everything will eventually come down to how much your budget can accommodate. Identify what your needs are and select the notebook that can provide them, but whichever model you end up with, it will be a worthy investment. They are extremely reliable, and the exceptional combination of style and substance inherent in these systems is unrivaled in the market.
