An AT&T customer service representative has stated that Apple informed the carrier they will not be releasing a new iPhone in June or July of 2011, as has been their practice every year since the original model debuted.
The statement, acquired by macrumors.com, reads as follow:
The customer service rep's admission is the first word from AT&T, Apple or Verizon on the release of the new iPhone, and has not been confirmed by any official spokesperson. As macrumors.com notes, customers service reps rarely get information ahead of an official release, but at this point, the delayed release of the iPhone 5 is quite possibly the worst kept secret in the industry.

"Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our web site when it is available to us".An analyst observing supply chain activity has already suggested that this was the case, and yet another says Apple will begin production on a model featuring the iPad 2 A5 processor in August for an October release.
